SERVING PHOENIX AND BEYOND
Professional IT Services Since 1994
Thirty-two years ago I was sitting at a CPA’s desk in Phoenix, showing him how to move a general ledger off a columnar pad and into a computer.
He was not excited about it.
Everything about that conversation is still relevant to the work I do today — which, as it turns out, is the same work. Only the machine has changed.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER
Heath Carlson
32 years in technology. 20 years delivering managed IT.
1994 A DOS prompt and a very skeptical accountant.
My first real job in technology was teaching certified public accountants to stop keeping books on paper.
If you weren’t there, it’s hard to appreciate how big an ask that was. These were people who had spent entire careers with a thirteen-column pad, a mechanical pencil, and an adding machine that printed a paper tape. Every number had a place you could point at. Every mistake left an eraser mark. The work was slow, and it was theirs.
Then I’d walk in with a beige box and a black screen with a blinking cursor, and ask them to hand all of it over.
The objection was never that the computer was too complicated. These were smart people; they picked up the software in an afternoon. The objection was something else, and one CPA put it better than I ever have:
“If I make a mistake on paper, I can find it. If the computer makes a mistake, where does it go?”
That was the real fear. Not the machine — the loss of visibility. Being wrong in a way you couldn’t see.
I’ve thought about that sentence for thirty-two years, because I have heard some version of it before every single technology shift since.
What I learned in those first years
I didn’t win those arguments with feature lists. I won them by sitting down and running the first month’s close both ways — on paper and in the software — and reconciling the two side by side until the numbers matched.
That’s when the fear went away. Not because the technology was impressive, but because we had proved it was trustworthy, and they had watched us prove it.
That’s the whole job. It was then and it still is.
Every wave since, the same conversation
- The late nineties brought networks, and with them the question of who could see whose files.
- The 2000s brought always-on internet and email that a business could no longer operate without — the first time downtime cost real money by the hour.
- Around 2006 I stopped selling break-fix and started delivering managed services. Watching systems continuously instead of waiting for the phone to ring turned out to be the single biggest improvement I ever made for clients.
- The 2010s moved everything to the cloud. Servers left the closet, phones became software, and a business could suddenly be run from anywhere.
- 2020 compressed a decade of remote-work adoption into about three weeks.
- The last few years brought ransomware and real compliance obligations — HIPAA, CMMC, NIST, cyber insurance questionnaires with teeth — and turned security from a product into a discipline.
Every one of those arrived with the same feeling in the room. Something arriving faster than people could evaluate it. The same question, wearing different clothes: if this goes wrong, will I be able to see it?
And now, AI
Which brings us to right now.
Artificial intelligence is the fourth genuine wave I’ve worked through, and it is moving faster than the three before it combined. It is already inside most businesses — not because anyone approved it, but because a good employee was trying to work faster and found a tool that helped.
Independent research puts regular AI use on company devices at around 45% of employees, up from 15% a year earlier, with most of it running through personal accounts the business can’t see. It is almost never malicious. It’s the same instinct that made that CPA good at his job: there has to be a faster way to do this.
But the same question applies, and it’s the one I’ve spent three decades answering. If information leaves your business through a tool nobody approved, will you be able to see it?
Today, for most companies, the honest answer is no.
So my job hasn’t changed. I still sit down with business owners and prove a new technology is trustworthy — carefully, with guardrails, and with a record that shows we did it properly. In 1994 that meant reconciling a month’s close twice. In 2026 it means knowing which AI tools have permission to read your email, and being able to prove to an auditor or an insurer that you knew.
Same job. Better tools. A lot more grey hair.
Why I still do the work myself
I’ve been a small business owner nearly as long as I’ve been in technology, which means I understand the position my clients are in — the payroll that has to clear, the customer who won’t wait, the decision that has to be made with incomplete information.
That’s why I don’t hand the important work to someone else. When you engage My Computer Pro, you get thirty-two years of judgment in the room, not a junior technician with a checklist and a script to escalate from.
At My Computer Pro, we’re here to be more than your IT provider — we’re your partner in success.
